Frequently Asked Battery Questions
What are the differences between Lead-Acid and Li-ion Batteries?
Lead-Acid Batteries
Also known as “wet” or “wet cell” batteries, these generate power through a reaction between lead plates and a fluid electrolyte (sulfuric acid mixed with water). They’re typically the most affordable option but require more upkeep, take longer to charge, and generally have a shorter lifespan compared to other battery types.
Lithium-Ion Batteries
These batteries use lithium as the electrolyte to generate electricity. They offer faster charging, no risk of leaks, and virtually no maintenance. With a lifespan roughly twice that of lead-acid batteries, they deliver long-term value—though at a higher upfront cost.
What are the different voltages?
12: Small / light equipment; powered pallet jacks.
24: Smaller equipment; end-rider, center-rider jacks, walkie stackers.
36: Mid-sized equipment; narrow aisle; 3-wheelers, some 4-wheelers.
48: Larger equipment; 4-wheel counterbalance.
72: Larger counterbalanced with greater capacities.
80: Larger equipment; pneumatic counterbalance.
When should your battery be replaced or repaired?
Knowing when to replace vs. repair your forklift battery is key to keeping your operation running smoothly. Over time, even the best-maintained batteries lose their ability to hold a charge, which can lead to shorter run times, higher maintenance costs, and unexpected downtime. By recognizing the signs early, you can plan ahead and avoid costly disruptions to your workflow.
Signs your battery may need to be replaced:
Battery doesn't hold a charge
Corrosion on the battery case
Spilled acid on the exterior
Smoke
Rotten egg smell
Corroded or damaged terminals
